Kate Scarbrow, Charlotte Bingham & Kristina Doupkova

Welcome back after the half term. I do hope that you enjoyed the holiday together. We return to another fairly long and very busy half term. We welcome Ms Doubkova to the Nurture team, she is already building bonds with our young people and embracing the fun that epitomises learning in Nurture!

In Autumn 2, we hope to revisit The Woodlands Trust in Shooters Hill as part of our Habitats topic, the children have always enjoyed these visits, in particular reacquainting themselves with the many animals that live at the trust.

We will also continue to have our weekly sessions with Tom - the music teacher. The children really look forward to these fairly challenging lessons - you will see their efforts at the Christmas concert towards the end of half term (date tbc).

Below, you will see what your young people are going to be learning about…

Curriculum: Autumn 2 2024

English: Beegu

She is lost. She is a friendly little creature, but the Earth People don't seem very welcoming at all. However, so far she has only met the BIG ones. The little ones are a different matter . . .

The unit begins with the children learning that there is a friendly alien on the loose somewhere in the local vicinity who needs our help. They describe the alien before writing letters of advice. The children will be creating an alien dictionary and will be making sock puppets of their own aliens! They will be writing reports before creating their own narrative based on the story shape of Beegu.

Maths: Maths No Problem

The children continue to work at different stages and paces on mathematical concepts. Some of the autumn term concepts include making equal groups, addition and subtraction problems, mass, space and numbers to 1000.

Science: Living Things & Their Habitats - Habitats

The children will be considering the question - How can we work out what’s alive and what’s not? They will collect specimens and sort them into categories. The children will then be investigating different  habitats and food chains. The unit will finish with them designing  and making a bug hotel that contains a variety of microhabitats to encourage a range of creatures.

Christianity: Jesus' example as the Son of God - Is it possible to be kind to everyone all of the time?

The children will be thinking about kindness and will think about times when they have been kind to others even when it was difficult. They will retell a story Jesus told about being kind  and will be able to give an example of when Jesus showed kindness. They will be thinking about whether Christians believe that kindness is important and will learn about the story of The Good Samaritan.

PSHE: Celebrating Differences

The children will begin to learn about stereotypes and will celebrate how we are the same and how we are different. They will begin to understand why it is important to play with others and what bullying means. The children will begin to problem solve and will learn to both give and receive compliments.

Computing: Digital Photography

The children will begin to explore the world of digital art and its exciting range of creative tools. They will be creating their own paintings, while getting inspiration from a range of other artists. The children will consider their preferences when painting with, and without, the use of digital devices.

Welcome to Nurture

2023 - 2024

A warm welcome to all of our new pupils and their families, and of course welcome back to our continuing pupils in Nurture. We also welcome Miss Bingham & Mr Arevalo, who are joining the Nurture Team, they will be supporting your child throughout their journey with us. We say a fond Nurture farewell to Miss Sutton who is embarking on her teacher training journey within the main school - we wish her all the very best and know that she will make the most amazing teacher!

On this page, you will find information about what your child is learning in the coming weeks. I will be updating the page periodically, with pictures of our superheroes and their adventures in Nurture.

Once again, we will be joined by a special class member - our class bear, Preston Flowers. Preston will be coming home with your child at some point this half term. He will arrive on a Friday for the weekend, we would like him back in school, ready to learn on Monday morning. It would be great if you could take some pictures of what Preston gets up to at your house, if you want to, take them on a smartphone and email them to me for printing. The pictures could be of you on an outing to the park, cooking together, reading a book - it is really up to you. If you have time, you could also write a few lines about what adventures he has been up to. This is meant to be a fun experience for the pupils, but if you have any questions or concerns, please do get back to me.

Once we are settled into the new school year, I will also be sending home a VERY small amount of homework. This may be a reading book, phonics or a small maths activity. When your child returns their completed task, they will be able to choose something from our prize box!

We have lots going on this half term, I will detail the curriculum coverage below. We have a trip planned to Shoreham Aircraft Museum, linked to our science topic and I am also hoping to organise a trip to The Horniman Museum. The children will participate in Assessment Week in week 3 of the term, this enables us to find out where gaps are for our superheroes and also their next steps, meaning we are able to adapt the curriculum directly for their needs. We are also planning to continue our 5 a Day whole school sessions, these are a great way to get our hearts pumping, have fun and get ready for our learning. In addition, we will also have our sensory circuit set up for children who need a reset throughout the day.

If you have any questions, queries or concerns, please contact me or one of the members of the Nurture team via the office on 0208 3177659 or alternatively via email katescarbrow@imperium.greenwich.sch.uk - I will get back to you as soon as possible.

The Nurture Team

Curriculum: Autumn 1 2024

English: The Odd Egg by Emily Gravett

All the birds have eggs to hatch. All except Duck. When Duck is delighted to find an egg of his own to look after: it's the most beautiful egg in the whole world! But all the other birds think it's a very odd egg indeed - and everyone's in for a big surprise when it finally hatches.

Children will be learning to identify different types of eggs and predicting who they might belong to, before exploring the text and its science links. They will be creating thought and speech bubbles and will also create diary entries, a letter and even a certificate. Their final outcome will be the creation of a non-fiction report - ‘ An Egg-spotter’s Guide.

Maths: Maths No Problem

The children are all working at different stages and paces on various mathematical concepts. You will be able to see from their homework what is currently being covered for your own child. Some of the Autumn term concepts include addition and subtraction within 40, column addition and place value of 3-digit numbers.

Science: Animals including humans - Healthy Animals

Children will be hatching eggs and studying the life cycle of chickens. They will begin to understand that exercise makes the heart work harder and is an essential part of a healthy lifestyle. They will also find out about healthy lunch box foods before designing and sharing their own snacks.

Computing: Information Technology Around Us

The children will consider the question - How is information technology (IT) being used for good in our lives? They will initially focus on IT in the home and will then explore how IT benefits society in places such as shops, libraries, and hospitals. The children will then be discussing the responsible use of technology, and how to make smart choices when using it.

Art: Exploring Art - Monet & Van Gogh

The children will be exploring the works of Claude Monet & Vincent Van Gogh. They will be using a range of materials creatively and will be developing a wide range of art and design techniques in using colour, patter, texture, line, shape, form and pace.

History: Commemorating Events Beyond Living Memory - The `First Aeroplane Flight’ & Famous for more than Five Minutes - ‘Inventors’

The children will learn about the Wright brothers and the story of their historic first aeroplane flight on December 17th 1903. They will find out about the history of flight and begin to understand how aeroplanes fly. The children will consolidate their learning by using music and role play to recreate the events of that auspicious day.

They will also meet the Wright Brothers and Leonardo da Vinci and will discuss and order their inventions on a timeline. Children will start to ask ‘inventor questions’ that lead to inventions. They will create technical drawings, design and build models and write tenders in the role of inventors.

PHSE: Being me in my World

The children will learn to explain why their behaviour can impact other people in class. They will also compare their own and their friends’ choices and will learn why some choices are better than others.
